A droid socket is a hole in your hull that you have deliberately made. It deserves more design attention than it usually gets.

Universal, actually

Nine common astromech chassis forms fit the AS-3 without an adapter. The retention collar is compliant rather than keyed, which means a unit that was never designed for your ship still seats correctly and still holds at fourteen g.

Permissioned bus access

The droid gets full read/write access to the systems bus — that is the point of having one — but through a permission layer the flight crew controls. Your astromech can re-route power and patch a failing coupling. It cannot silently change your jump solution unless you have said it may.

Ejection works both ways

Explosive bolt ejection can be triggered by the pilot or by the droid. Droid-initiated ejection sounds alarming until you consider the case where the socket is on fire and the crew is busy. Several customers have written to us about this feature. All of them still had a droid.

Fitting notes

Requires a 0.9 m hull penetration with local reinforcement — we supply the ring. Pairs naturally with the NC-1701 navicomputer. See the revised wiring standards before you run cable.
